I am a time traveller. Don’t believe me? Check out my tote.
At times, people (and their parts) are stuck in the past. They may feel trapped in behaviours or beliefs that once served them well but have since become barriers to growth. As an art therapist, I see this often—patterns that persist long after their usefulness, emotional echoes from experiences that shaped us. Part of my work is to help bring people back into the safety and calm of the present, to remind them that healing is possible and that they are not alone on their journey.
This is why I created my therapy tote. It serves as both a personal artistic expression and a reminder of the work I do. Every stitch, every detail, holds meaning. It represents my love for human growth and happiness, my dedication to supporting others, and my own journey as both a therapist and a traveller through time.
The Making of My Therapy Tote

Hand-embroidery is a slow, intentional process. It requires patience, presence, and a willingness to embrace imperfection (sounds like therapy right?). I spent several hours carefully stitching the design on the exterior of my tote, reflecting on my work and the meaning behind it. As I embroidered, I thought about why I chose this field, what keeps me grounded, and how I stay resourced as a therapist. As a seamstress I also get a kick out of wearable art, and more often then not, my clothing/accessories has sparked cool conversations with strangers.
The external design was inspired by a popular TV show, Rick and Morty, a subtle nod to the fact that I often work with young people. The show’s themes of adventure, existential questioning, and curiosity resonate with many of my clients, and it felt fitting to incorporate that energy into my bag.
Inside, the lining is whimsical and bright, a contrast to the deep reflections embedded in the outer layers. One side of the lining features small patches and pockets, perfect for holding little trinkets, rocks, or heart-shaped treasures I collect on my (time) travels. I’ve always been drawn to sentimental objects, and this bag allows me to carry those small reminders of joy with me. The opposing side of the lining is a bit more practical, and has pockets for a journal or notebook and the inevitable craft supplies I carry around with me everywhere. You never know when inspiration strikes.

Between the embroidered exterior and the carefully chosen lining, this tote took around 60 hours to complete, spread over the course of a month. Each stitch represents a moment of reflection, a piece of my journey woven into something tangible.
Join Me: Decorate Your Own Therapy Tote
On March 20th, I will be hosting a decorate-your-own tote bag workshop for therapists who feel drawn to crafting their own unique bag. (I am calling this workshop Totes Prepared, registration link can be found here) All supplies will be provided, including tote bags, fabric markers, patches, and embroidery materials. This workshop is open to all therapists, from student therapists navigating imposter syndrome to seasoned professionals looking to reconnect with their purpose.
If you’ve ever wanted a creative way to express yourself and reflect on your professional journey, this is the perfect opportunity. Your tote can serve as a visual reminder of your strengths, your growth, and the love that fuels your work.
Reflective Questions for Your Own Therapy Tote
As you design and decorate your bag, take time to reflect on these questions. Use them to guide your creative process, helping you infuse your tote with personal meaning:
- What qualities or attributes make me a strong, compassionate support person?
- Who are the people in my circle who support and love me?
- What is my inner motivation for doing the work that I do?
- How do I want to show up for my clients and myself?
- What symbols, colours, or images represent my therapeutic values and approach?
- What small joys or reminders of hope do I want to carry with me every day?
- How can I incorporate elements of play, whimsy, or nostalgia into my bag?
- If my tote could tell a story about me, what would it say?
Your tote is more than just a bag—it’s a reflection of your journey, your values, and your resilience. Whether you’re an experienced therapist or just beginning your professional path, this creative practice can help you connect with your work in a deeper way.
I hope to see you at the workshop, and I can’t wait to see the incredible designs and stories that unfold through your creations.
